Privacy Policy

Introduction
At PasteJet, we believe your privacy is paramount. This Privacy Policy explains how PasteJet (“we”, “us”, or “our”) handles your information when you use our clipboard management application for macOS (the “App”). PasteJet is available in multiple versions, including a standalone version available from our website and a version distributed through Setapp. This policy covers all versions of the App.
The short version: Your clipboard data stays on your Mac. The standalone version connects to our server only for license validation and offers an optional Ask AI feature that sends your selected clipboard item to OpenAI for processing — neither the sent text nor the AI response is stored on any server. The Setapp version does not include the Ask AI feature and makes no network connections.
Information We Don't Collect
PasteJet is designed with privacy as a core principle. We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information or usage data. Specifically:
- Clipboard Content: The text and data you copy stays on your Mac. In the standalone version, the only exception is when you explicitly use the optional Ask AI feature, which temporarily sends your selected clipboard item to OpenAI for processing. Neither the sent text nor the response is stored on any server by PasteJet. The Setapp version does not include the Ask AI feature, so your clipboard data never leaves your Mac.
- Personal Information: We don't collect your name, email address, or any other personally identifiable information.
- Usage Analytics: We don't track how you use the app, what you copy, or when you use it.
- Crash Reports: We don't automatically collect crash reports or diagnostic data.
- Device Information: We don't collect information about your Mac, operating system version, or hardware specifications.
- Network Activity: The Setapp version of PasteJet makes no network connections at all. The standalone version connects to our server only for license validation (on activation and app launch) and when you explicitly use the Ask AI feature. Only your license token is sent during validation — no clipboard data, personal information, or usage data is ever transmitted.
How the App Works Locally
PasteJet operates entirely on your Mac using local storage:
- Clipboard Monitoring: The app monitors your system clipboard to detect when you copy new content.
- Encrypted Local Storage: Your clipboard history is encrypted and stored locally on your Mac's file system in a dedicated file within the application's container. All copied items are encrypted before being written to disk, ensuring no other app can access your sensitive data.
- Keyboard Monitoring: The app monitors specific keyboard shortcuts (Command+V for paste history, Command+C for bin selection, and navigation keys while the popup is open). This is done locally and no keystroke data is stored or transmitted. All other keystrokes pass through unmodified.
- Sensitive App Exclusion: You can exclude specific apps (such as password managers or banking apps) from clipboard tracking entirely. When an app is on your ignore list, PasteJet will not record any content copied from it.
- No Cloud Sync: Your clipboard history is not synchronized to any cloud service or across devices.
Ask AI Feature (Standalone Version Only)
Note: The Ask AI feature is only available in the standalone version of PasteJet downloaded from our website. The Setapp version does not include this feature and makes no external network connections.
The standalone version of PasteJet includes an optional Ask AI feature that allows you to send a copied clipboard item to OpenAI's API (ChatGPT-5-nano) for AI-powered processing. Here is how it works:
- User-Initiated Only: Data is only sent to OpenAI when you explicitly choose to use the Ask AI feature. No clipboard data is ever sent automatically.
- What Is Sent: Only the specific clipboard item you select is sent to OpenAI's ChatGPT-5-nano endpoint for processing.
- No Storage: Neither the text you send nor the AI response is stored on any server by PasteJet. The response is returned directly to you and exists only locally on your Mac.
- Third-Party Processing: OpenAI processes the request according to their own privacy policy and data handling practices. We encourage you to review OpenAI's Privacy Policy for details on how they handle data.
Permissions Required
PasteJet requires certain system permissions to function properly:
Accessibility
Required to detect when you hold Command+V to access your clipboard history and Command+C to organize items into bins. This permission allows the app to monitor specific keyboard shortcuts but does not give us access to what you type. Only the shortcuts listed above are intercepted; all other keystrokes pass through unmodified.
Automation (Apple Events)
Required to paste clipboard content into other applications when you select an item from your history.
These permissions are used solely for the app's core functionality and do not enable us to collect any data about you or your usage.
App Security
PasteJet is built with Apple's Hardened Runtime and employs multiple layers of security to protect your data:
- AES-256-GCM Encryption: All clipboard data is encrypted using industry-standard AES-256-GCM encryption before being stored on disk, preventing other apps from reading your sensitive information.
- Keychain-Protected Keys: The encryption key is securely stored in the macOS Keychain and never leaves your device.
- Restricted File Permissions: All data files are stored with owner-only file permissions, ensuring only your user account can access them.
- Minimal Network Activity: The standalone version connects to the internet only for license validation and when you explicitly use the Ask AI feature. The Setapp version makes no network connections at all. No background data transmission occurs in any version.
- Hardened Runtime: The app runs with Apple's Hardened Runtime protections, which guard against code injection, memory tampering, and other exploits.
Data Retention and Deletion
Your clipboard history is stored locally on your Mac. You have complete control over this data:
- The app keeps up to 500 items in your clipboard history by default.
- You can manually delete individual items or clear your entire history at any time from within the app.
- Uninstalling the app removes all clipboard history data from your Mac.
- Your data is never stored by us on any server. In the standalone version, data sent via Ask AI is processed transiently and not stored by PasteJet. The Setapp version does not send any data externally.
Third-Party Services
PasteJet does not use any analytics platforms or advertising networks. The Setapp version operates entirely independently on your Mac with no third-party service connections. The standalone version connects to our server (pastejet.com) solely for license validation and has one additional third-party connection:
- OpenAI (Standalone Version Only): When you use the Ask AI feature in the standalone version, your selected clipboard item is sent to OpenAI's ChatGPT-5-nano API for processing. This is the only third-party service PasteJet communicates with, and only when you explicitly initiate it. Neither the sent data nor the response is stored by PasteJet on any server.
- Setapp (Setapp Version Only): If you use PasteJet through Setapp, your subscription and access is managed by Setapp. Please refer to Setapp's Privacy Policy for information on how they handle your data.
OpenAI's handling of data sent through their API is governed by their own privacy policy. This only applies to the standalone version of PasteJet.
Children's Privacy
PasteJet does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. Because we don't collect data, there is no risk to children's privacy when using our app.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. If we make changes, we will update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy.
Given that we don't collect any data, it's unlikely that any changes would materially affect your privacy. However, we encourage you to review this policy periodically.
Your Privacy Rights
Because PasteJet does not collect, store, or process any personal data about you, traditional data privacy rights (such as the right to access, delete, or port your data) are not applicable in the conventional sense. However:
- You have complete control over your clipboard history data stored locally on your Mac.
- You can delete any or all of your clipboard history at any time through the app interface.
- You can uninstall the app at any time to remove all associated data.
GDPR and CCPA Compliance
PasteJet is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) by design, as we:
- Do not collect, process, or store any personal data.
- Do not sell personal information (because we don't have any).
- Do not share data with third parties. The standalone version's optional Ask AI feature sends your selected item to OpenAI for processing only when you explicitly initiate it. The Setapp version does not share any data with third parties.
- Do not use cookies, tracking technologies, or analytics.

Privacy Policy Summary
PasteJet is designed to be private by default. Your clipboard history is encrypted with AES-256-GCM and stored locally on your Mac — it is never transmitted to any server. You can exclude sensitive apps like password managers from clipboard tracking entirely. The Setapp version makes no network connections whatsoever. The standalone version connects only for license validation and the optional Ask AI feature (which sends your selected clipboard item to OpenAI for processing — neither the sent text nor the response is stored by PasteJet). We believe your privacy should be the default, not an option.
